Fighting Violence Against Women: Franka and Susan’s Journey to Empowerment

Violence and inequality remain significant barriers for many young women in Uganda. However, through the support and opportunities provided by our boarding school, Nwoya Girls Academy, girls are breaking free from cycles of abuse and exclusion, reclaiming their futures, and finding their voices. Franka and Susan’s stories are a testament to the resilience of women and the transformative power of education.

Franka’s Story: From Hardship to Leadership

"Joining Nwoya Girls Academy is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me!"

At just 18 years old, Alimo-can Franka has already faced more challenges than most. After dropping out of school in Senior 3 due to financial difficulties, she eloped and had a baby with a man who later mistreated her. The abuse forced her to return to her mother’s home, feeling lost and defeated.

Everything changed when Franka was given the chance to join Nwoya Girls Academy, which allows mothers to continue their education. Franka embraced this opportunity wholeheartedly and has flourished. Alongside her studies, she is learning leadership skills and is currently the head girl of her school.

Franka’s journey has reignited her dreams. Motivated by educated women in society, she is determined to become a nurse and focuses on excelling in science subjects. She is also developing self-confidence and academic discipline, which she credits as keys to her bright future.

Susan’s Story: A New Life of Inspiration and Ambition

"Joining Nwoya Girls Academy totally gave me a new experience in life."

Sixteen-year-old Apwoyo-can Susan’s life before Nwoya Girls Academy was marked by hardship. Living with her father and stepmother in Te-okono village, she endured mistreatment at home and struggled to receive a proper education. Long walks to schools with poor facilities and inadequate teaching made learning difficult. With no role models to inspire her, Susan felt trapped in a cycle of limited opportunities.

Now a student at Nwoya Girls Academy, Susan’s life has transformed. In the supportive environment of a boarding school, she’s not only excelling academically but also overcoming her shyness. Inspired by her head teacher and female educators, she dreams of becoming a veterinary doctor and is working hard to achieve her goals.

Education: A Path to Freedom and Hope

For Franka and Susan, Nwoya Girls Academy is more than a school—it’s a safe haven and a launching pad for their ambitions. As one of Te-Kworo Foundation’s boarding schools, it provides education and leadership opportunities, empowering young women to rise above violence, poverty, and discrimination.

These stories highlight the critical role of education in breaking cycles of abuse and inequality. Through programs like those at Nwoya Girls Academy, girls are finding the strength to lead, the courage to dream, and the skills to build brighter futures.
