A Hospital That Will Save Thousands of Lives

In northern Uganda, where maternal mortality rates are among the highest in the world, access to quality healthcare is a matter of life and death. Too many women and babies lose their lives due to preventable childbirth complications simply because they cannot reach a hospital in time.

To address this crisis, Te-Kworo Foundation, in partnership with Sonic Healthcare Foundation and Barbara May Foundation, is building the Kworo–Sonic Healthcare Foundation Hospital, a state-of-the-art 42-bed maternal health facility in Agago District.

This hospital, set to open mid-2025, will provide free, life-saving maternal healthcare to thousands of vulnerable women and babies across four remote and underserved districts.

Maternal Health in Uganda Today:

6,000 women die annually due to pregnancy and childbirth-related complications.

94 babies are stillborn every day in Uganda. 81 newborns die each day, many due to lack of medical care.

Only 57% of births are attended by a trained health professional.

In northern Uganda, the maternal mortality rate is twice the national average, at 600 deaths per 100,000 births.

Revolutionising Maternal Healthcare in Northern Uganda

Bringing Critical Care Closer to Home
Currently, women experiencing obstetric complications must endure a two-hour journey on rough roads to reach the nearest surgical facility. Many do not make it in time. This new hospital will eliminate that dangerous delay, offering on-site surgical and specialist care for mothers and newborns.

A Life-Saving Blood Bank
One of the leading causes of maternal death is postpartum hemorrhage, yet blood supplies are scarce. The hospital will house the first-ever blood bank in the region, ensuring women can receive transfusions when they need them most.

Preventing & Treating Obstetric Fistula
The hospital will not only provide safe childbirth services to prevent birth injuries but will also offer specialized treatment for obstetric fistula, a devastating childbirth complication affecting thousands of women in Uganda.

A Hospital That Will Serve Thousands

The Kworo–Sonic Healthcare Foundation Hospital will serve a population of over 800,000 people, providing critical care to women who otherwise have nowhere to turn. The impact will be immediate and profound, reducing maternal deaths and ensuring that more babies survive their first days of life.

Hospital Features:

The Kworo-Sonic Healthcare Foundation Maternity Hospital will include:

  • Two operating theatres for emergency C-sections and life-saving surgeries.

  • Dedicated wards for mothers and newborns, preventing the spread of disease.

  • A neonatal unit to care for at-risk babies.

  • Pathology services to improve medical diagnostics and treatment.

A Partnership Built on Expertise

This hospital is the result of a powerful collaboration between three organizations with deep experience in maternal healthcare:

  • Te-Kworo Foundation, led by Alice Achan, brings over 20 years of grassroots work supporting war-affected girls and women in northern Uganda.

  • Sonic Healthcare Foundation, with expertise in global medical support, is funding the construction, equipment, and operational costs of the hospital for at least three years.

  • Barbara May Foundation, founded by Dr. Andrew Browning, a world-renowned fistula surgeon, will oversee the hospital’s medical services, drawing from its experience in running four maternity hospitals across Africa.

Additionally, Australian architecture firm NBRS has designed the hospital pro bono, ensuring it is built to the highest standards, and David Heap, a former NBRS architect, has moved to Uganda to oversee construction alongside Te-Kworo Foundation.

Global Expertise, Local Impact

Sonic Healthcare Foundation has actively supported hospitals in central Africa since 1996, and the Foundation currently supports hospital laboratories in Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Goma, DRC. The latter includes support of the pathology and radiology departments, as well as outreach programs in Congo. “We are delighted to help in the provision of the new hospital, which will include birthing suites, a specialised newborn baby unit and two operating theatres,” said Mr. Thitchener, Manager of the Sonic Healthcare Foundation.

Dr Andrew Browning, founder of the Barbara May Foundation, will oversee the medical and clinical aspects of the new hospital. The Kworo–SHF Hospital will be the fifth maternity hospital in the Barbara May group, joining two hospitals in Ethiopia (the Vision Maternity Care hospital in Barhir Dar, and Barbara May Maternity hospital in the remote Afar region), Kivulini Hospital in Tanzania and Reconciliation Hospital in South Sudan. Dr Browning is a leading fistula surgeon who has performed or facilitated 14,000 fistula surgeries around the world.
