Empowering Girls Through Education: 2024 Progress Report

Education is more than just learning—it is a pathway to opportunity, empowerment, and a brighter future. For many girls in northern Uganda, attending school is not a guarantee. Poverty, child marriage, and gender inequality often stand in the way of their education.

Through our Education Scholarship Project, Te-Kworo Foundation has provided life-changing opportunities for vulnerable girls across Pader, Kitgum, and Nwoya districts. This program has supported girls who are orphans, child mothers, children from destitute families, and those living with HIV/AIDS or disabilities—ensuring they have a chance to learn, grow, and build a brighter future.

In 2024, the program helped 783 girls access secondary and vocational education, creating a ripple effect of transformation in their communities.

A Year of Growth and Impact

The past year has been one of incredible progress for our schools. In addition to providing scholarships, the Foundation has:

  • Reequipped school computer laboratories to improve digital learning.

  • Renovated dormitories and kitchens to create a better living and learning environment.

  • Installed solar power to provide reliable electricity for studying and night prep.

  • Expanded vocational training, including tailoring and hairdressing courses.

  • Facilitated sports programs, with students excelling at the district, regional, and even national levels.

  • Procured and distributed 800 Bibles, supporting both spiritual growth and religious education.

These improvements have directly impacted not only the students but also the teachers, staff, and surrounding communities, benefiting over 3,100 people in total.

Scholarships That Change Lives

For many of the girls in our schools, scholarships are the only way they can continue their education. The support provided has covered tuition fees, meals, teacher salaries, and school materials, ensuring the smooth operation of our campuses.

  • 620 students are currently enrolled at Pader campus, making it the largest of the three schools.

  • 109 students are studying at Nwoya campus, including 12 child mothers with their babies.

  • 54 students are part of our vocational training programs in Kitgum, specializing in tailoring and hairdressing.

Many of these students have overcome immense challenges—from teen pregnancy to extreme poverty—and now have a renewed sense of hope for their future.

“Before I joined Kworo High School, I felt hopeless. I thought I had no future. Now, thanks to my scholarship, I can dream again. I want to become a teacher and help other girls like me.” – Gloria, student.

Beyond the Classroom: Sports, Vocational Training & Skills Development

Sports Achievements

Education at Te-Kworo Foundation schools is about more than academics—it’s about holistic development.

  • In 2024, Pader campus emerged as district champions in volleyball, football, and athletics.

  • The volleyball team went on to compete at the national level, bringing home a certificate of participation and national recognition.

  • Nwoya campus also secured a regional championship trophy for volleyball.

These achievements have boosted students’ confidence, fostered teamwork, and showcased the talent of our girls on a national stage.

Vocational Training & Skills Development

Not all students will pursue higher education, which is why Te-Kworo Foundation also prioritizes vocational training.

  • Tailoring and hairdressing courses have helped students gain practical skills that will allow them to start small businesses and become financially independent.

  • Agriculture training has empowered students to grow food on school land, supplementing their meals and teaching sustainable farming techniques.

These programs are protecting girls from early marriage and exploitation, equipping them with real-world skills that ensure long-term self-sufficiency.

Improving School Facilities for a Better Learning Environment

Providing a safe, comfortable, and well-equipped learning environment is critical to student success.

Key Infrastructure Improvements in 2024

  • Dormitory renovations improved living conditions and created a more organized, clean space for girls.

  • Kitchen renovations and new cooking stoves ensured that meals were prepared more efficiently.

  • Solar power installation in Pader and Nwoya campuses now provides reliable electricity, especially for evening studies.

  • 145 new classroom chairs were purchased to accommodate growing student numbers.

  • 110 new double-decker beds improved sleeping arrangements in Pader, where student enrollment has increased significantly.

  • A new grinding machine was installed at Pader campus, reducing meal preparation costs and improving efficiency.

These improvements have dramatically enhanced students’ daily lives, making learning more effective and comfortable.

Challenges & Lessons Learned

Despite the successes, 2024 presented some challenges:

  • High costs for science education: Practical lessons in chemistry, physics, and biology are expensive. The Foundation secured additional funding for lab materials, but long-term solutions are needed to fully equip science programs.

  • Rising cases of student illness: Frequent sickness among students led to increased medical expenses. Moving forward, the school will conduct regular mosquito spraying to prevent malaria outbreaks.

Each challenge has provided valuable lessons that will inform how we strengthen our schools and support our students in the years to come.

Looking Ahead: A Brighter Future for Girls in Uganda

Thanks to the incredible dedication of the Te-Kworo Foundation teams in Uganda and Australia, 2024 has been a year of tremendous growth and impact.

  • 783 girls have stayed in school, gaining knowledge, skills, and hope for their future.

  • Sports, vocational training, and infrastructure improvements have enriched the learning experience.

  • Solar power, renovations, and better resources have created an environment where students can thrive.

We are deeply grateful to our donors, supporters, and partners who have made this possible. Together, we are ensuring that every girl has the chance to learn, grow, and build a future full of possibilities.

Thank you for being part of this journey.
